LEAP-Kids is a statewide and regional promoter of the civic mission of our schools and communities with a focus on providing conflict resolution instruction, peer mediation training, school safety planning and bullying prevention education. Led by Executive Director David Keller Trevaskis, LEAP-kids is a founding partner in PennCORD, the Pennsylvania Coalition for Representative Democracy. PennCORD is a unique union of educational, advocacy, and governmental organizations that are committed to improving civic learning for students in grades K-12 through a coalition led by the National Constitution Center, the Pennsylvania Bar Association, The Office of the Governor, First Lady Marjorie O. Rendell, and the Pennsylvania Department of Education. LEAP-Kids is the principal training source for Project PEACE, the "P" in the LEAP-Kids acronym. Project PEACE (Peaceful Endings through Attorneys, Children and Educators) is a conflict resolution and anti-violence program implemented in Pennsylvania and Indiana by the state bar associations and Attorney General's Offices that provides an education in the skills of conflict resolution that are necessary for civic participation. This public-private partnership introduces dispute resolution techniques to schools and students, ranging from peer mediation to bullying prevention programs. LEAP-Kids houses the Pennsylvania Youth For Justice (YFJ) site, serving as the statewide center for law-related education. Through YFJ, LEAP-Kids works with Pennsylvania law schools to involve law students in civic education and with corporate lawyers to promote diversity outreach among the Commonwealth's youth. LEAP-Kids also works closely with the Pennsylvania Council for Social Studies, running the Law-Related Education Special Interest Group, and with the Pennsylvania We the People Program which is coordinated statewide by the Freedoms Foundation of Valley Forge. LEAP-Kids Executive Director Trevaskis teaches numerous graduate courses for area universities, most notably Alternative Dispute Resolution for Arcadia University and a series of classes, covering topics as diverse as sports law and crisis, for Gratz University through Bob Randall Associates, Inc. LEAP-Kids works in partnership with the Pennsylvania Bar Association (PBA) to promote civic learning. The PBA runs five major law-related education programs across the commonwealth: Celebrate the Constitution; Project PEACE; Law Day; Mock Trial and Stepping Out for Seniors. |
